FOR DEAR OLD WINDBER
AN EXPLANATION

We band members have been hearing some comments about our not cheering at the Shade game. We'd like to straighten a few thing: out.
In the first place the band has a long march before the game and, believe me, we're pretty tired when we reach the stadium. I takes a lot of energy just to reach your seat and then when you do sit down and try to catch your breath the cheerleaders start their work. Boy, I for one don't feel like yelling.
We do a lot more work than some of you students think. Every day in the hot sun, or in the cold rain we practice, practically wearing ourselves out trying to support our team and school while other students can be sitting comfortably in a classroom. We're running up the hill from the stadium, when others are already dismissed from school. Sometimes we have to give up a second period or an evening for an extra practice.
Finally a game comes around and the students moan that we're not supporting our team enough because we're not cheering. Sure you guys who have been sitting in the stadium for an hour or so before the game have enough strength to yell. Give us a chanc4 to catch our breath and we will yell too.
A BAND MEMBER!!!

Back To School

School days, school days, good old golden rule days! Are they so good? Most students wonder about this when they first start back to school after the summer vacation. Remember, without school we'd probably not have the ability to reason about whether schooling was worth while or not.
We, in America, are very fortunate to be able to attend such a modern and convenient school. Now that school is well under way, we might as well get down to "brass tacks." Never forget school makes the person-or at least tries to!
Wandering through the halls sometimes one can hear "I sure wish I were out of school." But remember, the story changes once you're out, so we might as well make the best of our schooling.
If we laugh and be gay school won't seem like a drudgery, but a pleasure!

Fall Fashions

We're really starting out in full bloom this year with the new fads and fashions. To begin from head to toe we have the boys letting their hair grow in longer than the girls and girls getting theirs cut almost as short as the boys. Next we have collars worn up on the neck on both boys and girls. Boys are really hitting it with these pegged pants and girls with full skirts with crinoline slips worn under. Of course, there are pegged slacks for the girls, too.

How Do You Like Us!

A group of freshmen boys and girls had these comments to make about Windber High School:
Charles Webb--"Lots of girls to flirt with."
  Richard Blough-"Pretty good."
Jimmy Felix-"A lot more things to do around here."
Barbara Hobba-"Oh, it's all right if you like school."
Patty Carolus-"The best high school around."
Stanley Wozniak--"I like those tall senior girls."
Barbara Stopko-"Lots of nice boys up here, especially one."
Ruth Wise-"Grand, but a little mixed up." Gerry Greybeck-"Sensational." Pete Maurizeio - "Better than good."

There are also "fruit boots" in many colors for the boys and white preferred for the girls.
Have you seen Sonia Bee,ghley with her white bucks, and those pegged pants that Bob Bartek and Eddie Golish are wearing? Have you noticed the modified D. A.'s that Eleanor Reed and Patty Stefanick are sporting around these days? Dig those up-turned collars that the kids have been wearing! Plant you now and dig you later-till next month kids.

Platter Chatter

To start off the new school year with a bang, here are some of the songs sweeping the country. Tony Bennett's really rocking the country iside with his No. 1 tune, "Rags to Riches." Also, "Hey Joe," "Ta Ammo," and "Sitting In the Sun," by Mr. Rhythm himself, F'rankie Laine. Joni James, sitting right on top, spins her latest platters, "wly Love, iviy Love," and "You're Fooling Someone."
For the Get Hep Jitterbug Kats the Four Lads really jump with their very latest "Istanbul." "Fractured" by Bill Haley's Comet- and "Tonight Love," by Don Cornell also hit the spot. Bob Denning's "Too Long, Too Long" is really a thriller. "Love Me Again" by Sunny Gales, really can't be beaten.
For the more sophisticated Kats is "Hey, Bell Boy," and "All About Ronnie." Some of the other recordings climbing the ladder real fast are "Reflections In the Water” by Dinah Shone, "Cup of Joy": by Jo Stafford, and that real hep "Hey Combodi" by Julius LaRosa.
Jimmy Boyd and Frankie Laine's "Let's Go Fishing," is also a popular song. And that brand new release of Eddie Fisher's "Many Times," is really going to the top. In the Instrumental World some of the tops are "Don't Take Your Love From Me" by the Three Sons, "Oh" by Pee Wee Hunt, and "Dragnet" by Ray Anthony. "The Moon Is Blue" by Ralph Martari is another popular tune.
Some of the songs earlier in the season were "Crying In the Chapel" by June Vali, "P. S. I Love You" by the Hill Toppers, and "With These Hands" by Eddie Fisher. Well, kids, it's about time to close the record shop now. But we'll be back next month.

Dangerous Dan

A bunch of germs were hitting it up, in the bronchial saloon Two bugs on the edge of the larynx, were jazzing a ragtime tune
  While back of the teeth in a solo game sat dangerous Dan Kerchoo;
And watching the pulse was his light of love, the lady known as Flu.

Cheering Notes

Ten cheerleaders and five majorettes went to Camp Tusca¬reka beginning August 23 through 29 for the purpose of practicing. While they were there the girls learned new cheers and routines.
This year the cheerleaders got new pleated skirts, white sweaters and beanies.   There are eight regular and two substitute cheerleaders. They are: Helen Rakoczy (captain), Dorothy Lurch, Rose Wargo, Mary Lou Wozniak, Lillian Hromack, Doris Schwer, Janet Mickey and "Nettie" Consolo. The substitutes are "Kassi" Sherlock and Dorothy Kluk.
The new majorettes are Carol Sherlock, Emma Rakoczy, Shirley Rakoczy and Danielle Smith. The others are Rita Verostick, Barbara Stone, Janet Crist and Florence Sendek.
We have learned via the grape¬vine that a senior girl who is an office helper is engaged. She's pretty Betty Lou Langley. Betty takes the Commercial Course and is a big help to Mr. Cassler and Mrs. Reagan. The lucky husband-to-be is "Herb" Farbo.

Interruption
A patron of a Milwaukee movie house was enjoying SALOME. During the scene in which Rita Hayworth does the dance of the seven veils the head of John the Baptist is brought in on a platter. His reverie was broken by a teen-aged voice in the next row commenting: "Man, dig that crazy dessert!"
