Class Elections Held In W. H. S.

  The Student Body of Windber High School held their annual lass elections September 23. Class officers are:

Cheer Contest To Be Held Nov. 20

  The students of Windber High School are invited to attend the annual cheerleading contest at Conemaugh Township High School, November 20, 1953, at 7:30pm This contest presents cheerleaders from Somerset and Cambria Counties.
  The judging of the cheers will be based on the following:
  Adaptability of Cheer - 10
  Co-ordination of groups - 25
  Originality of Cheer - 20
  Uniqueness - 10
  Pep - 25
  Appearance and
    Neatness of Group - 10
  A dance will follow the contest. the general student and adult admission is 50c.

Choruses Plan Chapel Program

  The Choruses this year will hold their chapel on November 10. The Girls' Chorus is learning "Night Song," "For You," "Joshua Fit de Battle," and "Prayer For Our Country."
  The Girls' Ensemble is singing "Love Sends a Sweet Bouquet of Roses," "Noel Noel," and "If, With All Your Heart."
  The Boys' Quartette have several songs underway.
  The Mixed Chorus is practicing these arrangements: "Come Back to Sorrento," "Panis Angelicus," "My Heart Is a Silent Violin," "I Got Shoes," "Anywhere I Wander," "Paw Paw Patch," "Ho-lali," "Yea Watchers and Ye Holy Ones," and "Tea For Two."
  Mr. Lambert says the orchestra is learning "Day Break," "Anchors Aweigh," "When I Grow Too Old To Dream." The Program for the Chapel is not completed.

Quartette Formed

  Something new has been added to W. H. S. in the line of music. A boys' quartette has been organized by Miss Fornear. The quartette consists of these boys: Larry Wirick, Robert Bartek, Robert Rhodes, and Ronald Bahoric. The boys are working on "Down By The Riverside," "Old Aunt Jemima," and "Get Away From This Cornfield"

To Go To Central Western Chorus

  The results of the Central Western Chorus tryouts have been decided. They are: First sopranos: Rosemary Wargo, Sally Bettings and Evelyn Constantino. Second sopranos: Peggy Hill and Linda Aldstadt. First tenor, Larry Wirick, and second bass, Ronald Bahorick.
  The Central Western Chorus will be held on November 19, 20, 21, at Ford City High School.
  Mr. Martin Thompson, vocal instructor, will be host.
  Miss Mary Muldowney of the New York University faculty, will be guest conductor. Miss Muldowney was guest conductor oŁ the Pennsylvania state high school chorus last year and also guest conductor when Windber High School entertained the Central Western4Distrlet choruses in 1952.

Junior in Turkey Queen Contest

  Last month Judy Toomey, a junior of Windber High School, was selected to vie for the title of Miss Turkey Queen of Pennsylvania. The contest took place at the Ebensburg Fair Grounds, September 23.
  Contestants were judged according to beauty, personality, photogenes’and poise (including ability to read and speak).
  The qualifications necessary were that each contestant must be from sixteen to twenty-one years of age and must be a daughter or ward of families producing at least three hundred turkeys.
  Although Judy was not chosen Queen, she had the honor of being chosen runner up.

Dramatics Club Has Initiation

  The Dramatics Club opened its season with their initiation on September 28. The girls lead to wear men's long underwear, one stocking, one sock and two different shoes. The boys wore swimming trunks, fishing boots, and girls' halters. The club served cake and milk, after which there was dancing. The club, which has 104 members this .year, is planning to present a play in the near future.
  Miss McLaughlin is back from Iraq where she was teaching last year. She is adviser of the Dramatics Club.

Rose M, Santucci Is New Teacher

  An addition to the Windber High School faculty is Rosemarie Santucci. She is taking her sister, Mrs. Yocca's place and is teaching the Commercial subjects.
  Miss Santucci was born in Windber and attended Windber High School. She is a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College. She did her student teaching in Ebensburg. She taught three weeks in Lewistown before coming to Windber High.
  Miss Santucci chooses veal cutlets as her favorite food and likes to watch TV or go to the movies in her leisure time. She prefers to watch football as her favorite sport.
  "I wish I had half their energy," was Miss Santucci's comment on the Windber High students.

It's A Snap

  On October 14, all the students of W. H. S. were "mugged." Mr. Ed Arisman arrived with his camera and shot everyone in sight.
  Mr. Arisman is a fast worker. He says he takes three to five pictures a minute. It doesn't matter to him whether it's a girl's or boy's picture he's taking; the shutter clicks as rapidly for one as for the other.
  Sometimes he has to coax his subjects to smile-and with three to five a minute, that's fast talk.
  One of the most difficult jobs he ever had was taking a picture of a boy with a Mohawk hair-cut.
  He didn't know from what angle he would look best.
  Mr. Arisman has been taking pictures in W. H. S. for the past three years.

Senior Council

  The Senior Council is made up of the following students this year: Larry Wirick, Peggy Trysnicky, Barbara Stone, Steve Benko, Bill Dusack, Ed Hordubay and Dorothy Luch.
  They represent the senior class and arrange activities for them.

It's a Date

  Mixed Chorus Chapel Program -November 10.
  Junior Y Teens Pep Dance November 13.
  Assembly Program, Lew Hershey -November 23.

Essay Contests Open To Students

  October and November are months in which essay contests are popular. "Help Make Windber America's Safest City" was the first essay of the month to be written. It had to contain a hundred words or less, and was open to grades nine to twelve. The prizes were $5.00, $3.00, and $2.00. The deadline was October 14.
The "Physically Handicapped"
  This essay contest begins November 1, and ends February 1. It is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction.
  National prizes are $1,000, $400, $300, $200, and $100. Students from grades eleven to twelve are eligible, and the essay must be less than 1,200 words.
  "The Voice of Democracy" contest is a broadcast script and voice competition. These essays will be selected from November 16 to November 20. The winners will go to Washington, D. C. and will be presented college scholarship checks of $500 and a radio or television set. After visiting the White House and other government buildings they will spend a week at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia.

Teachers Attend Annual Institute

  October 16 was a day that the teachers and students of W. H. S. got a period of rest from each other. The occasion was the 25th annual Central Western Education Conference at Indiana, Pa., which all of the Windber teachers attended.
  The theme for this year's conference was "Education For Constructive Living." The meetings were held on the Campus of State Teachers College at Indiana, Pa.
  The program consisted of general, institute and section meetings. Windber's own Superintendent of Schools Clyde F. Bounds was Chairman of the Language Arts in the Elementary School.

W. H. S. Teen Canteen Holds First Dance

  The Windber Teen Canteen held an opening dance after the Shade Twp. football game September 12, at the Recreation Hall. The admission was 50c. The dance was open from 10 to 12 P. M. with music furnished by Dave Dysert and his orchestra.   The general chairman for the dance was Paul Keller.
  Other committee members were: Tickets, Mary Lou Wozniak- Publicity, Susan Bounds; Decorations, Janie Williams; Refreshments, Paul Gerfy.

William Pennel Is New Junior

  W. H. S. has a new student enrolled in the junior class, William Pennel, who hails from Adams Township.
  Bill is 17 years old, as brown hair and blue eyes, and stands about five feet, eight inches tall. He is taking the General Course and has no favorite subject, except gym. When asked his opinion of W. H. S., he said he's not quite used to the new surroundings, but guesses it's o. k.
  While attending school in Adams Township, Bill was a member of The Dance Club, Hunting and Fishing Club, and The Rifle Club.
  If you are ever looking for Bill, you'll probably find him with his two friends, Merel Corle and Ernie Miller.

Committees For Freshman Dance

  On October 15 the freshman class held its annual meeting. At the meeting it was decided to hold a dance during the Christmas season. Later on, the date was changed to October 29, because of Advent's preceding Christmas.
  The committees selected for the dance are:

  Miss Fornear has once again organized the Girls' Ensemble. The members are: Barbara McDowell, Pauline Custer, Sally Betting, Rose Wargo, Barbara Johanning, Viola Miller, Donna Pomroy, Peggy Hill, Suzanne Gillespie, Lorraine DeGuilio, Alma Alexander, Kassi Sherlock and Linda Aldstadt.
  The songs they have this year are: "Noel, Noel," "If With All Your Heart" and "Love Sends a Little Gift of Roses."

Clown To Visit Windber High

  On November 23, Lew Hershey, a famous American Circus Clown, will give an assembly program here at the school. The program will be filled with all the funny stunts a clown can do. Students of W. H. S. will be able to enjoy the antics of a professional merry maker, famous in every state and in every circus ring.
