Baccalaureate Is Held Sun., May 16
  Baccalaureate services for the seniors were held May 16th, in the Windber High School Auditorium. The program began at 8 o'clock p. m.
  First there was a procession by the senior's. The invocation was then given by Reverend John Gaus.
  The Senior Ensemble and Audience sang a hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers." The Scripture and Prayer was read by Reverend Warren C. Kissinger. The Senior Ensemble then sang the "Cherubim Song."
  Reverend Franklin Senger addressed the Seniors on "Successful Living," after which the Ensemble sang "Beautiful Savoir."
  Reverend Stephen Sedor gave an address on "Three Dimensions." The hymn, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," followed by the Audience and Senior Ensemble.
  Following the hymn, benediction was given by Reverend Father Francis Mastrovito, T.O.R.
  The Senior Ensemble sang “The Lord Bless You And Keep You.”
  “The program was brought to a conclusion with a Recessional I "Andante Relijiosi."


Eleanor Voytko To Co To Coronation Ball
  The senior class has selected Eleanor Voytko to represent Windber high school at the Coronation Ball to be 'held at Johnstown Center, University of Pittsburgh, on May 22.
  Eleanor, who was the seniors' choice for the Maple Queen contest, took the commercial course and was active in the Commercial Club, the Girls' Chorus, the F.H. A., and participated in the Senior Ensemble on Recognition Day.
  This year, for the first time, all students attending the dance will have the opportunity to vote in the selection of he Queen.


Seniors Try For Scholarships
  On Saturday, April 24, several students from W.H.S. journeyed to Somerset to take tests to qualify for the American Legion scholarships. These student’s made the trip: Sally Morris, Susie Bounds, Loretta Bricker, Lillian Zvolerin, and Thomas Russian.
  The results of these tests have not been posted.


Editors Attend Conference   On April 6, editors of the HiTimes staff attended a news conference at Conemaugh Twp. High School. This conference consisted of different meetings for the editors.
  Robert Puricelli took charge of the meeting of sports editors. Others attending this conference from Windber were: Lillian Zvolerin, "Biddy" McDowell, Donna Kough, Francis Novak, and Miss Keenan.
  The Legislature voted gradual emancipation of Negro slaves March 1, 1780.


The Home EC To Have Picnic
  The Home Ec. Club is having a picnic on May 18. It will be held at Recreation Park. The members are allowed to bring a guest. It will begin at six o'clock.

SENIOR

EDWARD GREENE

  President of the 1954 Senior Class, has been a very active Commercial student during his high school years. Ed is a member of the Commercial Club and also represents 302 in the Student Council.

LILLIAN HROMACK

President of F. N. A.
  "Lil's" one desire is to be a nurse. Lil helped to cheer the Ramblers to victory with her talent as a cheerleader. She was active in the Dramatics Club and Thespians, and worked hard as our Senior Class treasurer. Lil was also an attendant to the Football Queen.

Home Ec Seniors Hold Dinner, Apr. 13
  The senior Home Ec girls have been very busy for the past several weeks making preparations for their buffet dinner which was held on April 13.
  The central theme for the decorations for the dinner was Easter. The menu consisted of baked Spain, candied sweet potatoes, broccoli, pear salad, relish, rolls, butter, frozen pineapple tart, tea and coffee.
  The annual buffet dinner is part of a unit of entertaining that is required for the home ec girls who are seniors.
  On Wednesday another group of senior girls will prepare for a dessert party. Their menu will consist of baked Alaska and orange freeze float.


Severine Chief Speller
  Mary Alice Severine won the first prize, a gold medal, in the spelling bee which was held as an assembly program in the auditorium on April 21.
  Loretta Bricker was awarded a silver medal as second place winner, while Edward Greene won the bronze, third-place medal.
  Mr. Wingard acted as spelling master. The awards were given by the Miriam-Webster Dictionary Company.

  Just about one-third of all the nation's hosiery is made in Pennsylvania.

RALPH FACCIANI

  Ralph Facciani is the Veep of the Senior Class. One of Windber's best athletes, Ralph played quarterback on the football team. He also is an honor student.

SUSAN GRIMISON

  Susan Grimison is the Secretary of the class. Sue has been very active these last four ,years. She is president of the Y-teens, a member of the Dramatics Club and a Thespian.

Sr. Class Dwindles
  The class of "54" ways originally a much larger class, but in the course of our high school career, many of our classmates have fallen by the wayside - approximately 44. Do you remember George Munich, Dennis Miller, Shirley Strahan, Robert Smith, John Stipanik, and Robert Faust?
  Josephine Purchnic, Stella Pruchnic, Norma Phillips, Ethel Yingling, Peggy Barbey, Bill Martell, Shirley Law, Jerry Zalar, Dorothy Jean Beard, Bob Hissong, and Barbara Anderson were once with us.
  Elwood Wargo, Elsie Helsel, Betty L. Langley, Margaret Babula, Doris Dayton, Dorothy Figard, Betty Chizmar, Louise Perkosky, John Lapinsky, Janet Weaver, and Dorothy Zarnesky all decide not to finish with us. Have you forgotten Louise Knecht, Anna McAndrews, Pat Ott, Robert Greene, George Yourich, Pauline Horvath, Anthony Simone. Margie Marks, Shirley High, Joanne Murray, Joan Carolus, Charles Reynolds, Bob Dawson, Thelma Eash, Ralph Custer, and Bill Marks? One of our classmates, Eugene Poet, died during our junior year.

Recognition Day Is Rig Success

  On May 6 the Senior Class held their Recognition Day Service, Mr. Cassler made an introductory speech explaining the purpose of the first Recognition Service.
  Awards were presented by members of the faculty to students displaying outstanding work in and outside of the classroom.

Class To Present Gift

  The Class of 1954 will present W.H.S. with a gift of remembrance. The gift will be a directory and bulletin board with movable letters for the current schedule of the week's coming events. It will be placed in the main hall across from the office.

Girls Receive Gifts

  This year the senior girls were presented gifts by the Bassel Furniture Company. Each girl received a miniature cedar chest, an exact replica of the famous Lane Cedar chests. The miniature chests are 9" by 4".

Plans Made For Commencement

  The annual Commencement Day exercises for the Senior Class of 1954, will be held May 17, 1954 in the high school auditorium. Mr. Cassler has announced this program:
High School Orchestra

  1. Andante form the "Symphony in G. Major" - Haydn.
  2. On the Trail - Grofe Herfurth.
  Invocation - Rev. Father Stephen Hegedus.
  Soprano Solo: "Let My Song Fill Your Heart" - Rose Wargo.
  Trumpet Solo: "Fantasee Brilliants Arban", Arr. Goldman - Richard Rizzo.
  Address: "One Man Power" - Dr. Clara Cocherile.
  Tenor Solo: "One Alone, Comberg - Larry Wirick.

  Postlude: "Ave Verum", Mozart High School Orchestra.


Commercials Take Test
  A Navy representative from Pittsburgh gave 15 Commercial students an exam on April 12. The students taking the exam are those who have expressed an interest in working for the Navy Department in Washington, D. C. as stenographers.
  The test consisted of a clerical quiz, shorthand at 60 words a minute transcription, and speed tests.

Senior Boys Join The Service

  The closing day is about to come for all the seniors. They are looking forward very much to this day. Many of the senior boys have chosen to serve their country. They are:
  Air Force - John Waldman, Frank Berkey, Tom Russian, Jack Hritz, and Rudy Pristow.
  Navy - Bob Bartek, John Campitell, John Hajnos, Jim Negrey, Joe Polgar, Ray Tantorno, Harold Jacobs, and Roland Wise.
  Marines - Gerald Kephart and John Sombronski.

F.H.A. Holds Party

  On April 21, the F.H.A. Club held a skating party for members and non-members. Tickets were sixty cents and Veronica Kosterko, vice president of the club, was in charge of the ticket sale.
  There were approximately fifty at the party. Mrs. Mayer the adviser, was also present.
  This party was held at Skateland.

Yell Leaders Picked

  Miss Rowland and the six senior cheerleaders have chosen eight new girls to cheer for the 1954-55 season. They are: Janet Mickey, Nettie Cunsolo, Phyllis Horwath, Helen Makuch, Myrna Kiern, Beth Paul, Priscilla Potts, Judy Stoy, Virginia Campitell and Tillie Findish.
