Bob Ziegler Top Scorer

  Bob Ziegler was high scorer for the Windber High School junior varsity during the past season.
  Playing guard, Ziegler counted 61 field goals and 42 of 79 fouls for 164 points. Richard DePolo, playing part of the season, was second with 116 markers and Dick Kovalsky was third with 91 points.
  The Ramblers won seven of 20 games and scored a total of 741 points against 853 for their opponents. Individual scoring follows:

Franklin Jays Down Windber 43-40

  Franklin nipped Windber, 43-40, to move into the Class A finals opposite Westmont-Upper Yoder. The Blue Jays won the game at the foul line, converting 25 out of 39 against 12 of 21 for Windber. The Ramblers outscored Franklin from the floor, 14-9.
  Franklin took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period, but fell behind, 20-L5, at the end of the half. The Jays scored 12 points in the third against four for the Ramblers to resume command, 27-24. Each team counted 16 points in the final round,
  The Jays held a 37-32 lead midway in the fourth period, but the Ramblers moved into a tie, 37-37. Tom Serokman then made two fouls to give Coach Milan Gjurich's Jays the lead for keeps. Joe Sendek was high scorer for the game with 22 points.
  The Summaries:
  The first evidence of local civic government in Bucks County dates back to 1680.
  Friedensstadt in Lawrence County was founded in 1770 by Christian Delaware Indians.
  Bedford County comprised at one time almost all of what was the southwestern part of the state.

30 Men Report For Track Teams

  The track team for this year is on its way. Thirty men have reported for practice, only 10 of whom are returning from last year. George Mease is the coach of the team.
  No date has been set for the first meet.
  The members of the squad are: Seniors: Fred Greene, Roland `'Vise, Bill Keller, John Hajnos, Ralph Facciani, John Sombronski and Rudy Pristow. Juniors: Pete Seese, Dick Grove, Bill Foltz, Joe Hordubay, Don Stanish, and Joe Kush. Sophomore: Steve Beretzel.
  The managers are Bob Puricelli, George Shank and Alfred Minnitti.

Windber Defeats Altoona Catholic

  Windber beat Altoona Catholic, 60-88, to advance in the annual St. Francis College Varsity F Tournament in Doyle Hall.
  Joe Sendek scored 21 points, including a pair of fouls in the last five seconds, as the Windber Ramblers bumped Altoona Catholic out of the Class A competition. Gwynn Gahagen tallied 20 for the winners.
  Defending champion Ebensburg was knocked out of the running by the Hilltoppers of Westmont, 80-69, as Art Muslin bagged 29 points for the winners. In the lone "B" contest, Adams romped over Lilly, 66-40, as Joe Slonac scorched the cords for 35 points. The summaries:

Joe Sendek Leads Scoring With 449

  Joe Sendek, senior guard, of Windber High School led the Rambler team in the scoring column during the past season with a total of 44D points.
  Sendek rounded out his third season as a regular and bagged 133 field goals and 183 of 237 fouls for an average of 18.7 points per game. He finished his varsity season by being named to the first team in the St. Francis Varsity F. basketball tournament.
  Ken Solden, junior, center, was second with 387 points on 161 field goals and 65 fouls. Solden had his highest scoring peak with 39 points at Ferndale. His 18 field goals in this game also were a season high.
  Sendek had the best single-game foul record, hitting on 16 of 19 tries against Westmont in Recreation Hall.
  The Ramblers finished with 13 wins and 11 losses to give Coach Steve Kaplan his sixth season with a record of .500 or better. In six years under Kaplan's coaching the Ramblers have 95 victories and 67 defeats. Prior to Kaplan's arrival as Windber coach, the Ramblers failed to hit over the .500 mark for seven straight seasons.
  The Ramblers made 381 of 567 tries for a percentage of 67. The opponents converted 383 of 700 for 54.7 per cent. Individual averages follow:

Sr. Banquet, Apr. 28

  The Senior Class of 1954 will hold their annual banquet in the Scalp Level V. F. W. on April 28. The main course will consist of roast beef.
