Central Western Orchestra Held

  The Central Western District Orchestra was held at Apollo Area Joint High School on April 8, 9, and 10. First violin: Thomas Korzi, Jane Marko; Second violin: Peggy McCune, Barbara Custer, Theresa Csordas, Lydia Geisel, Irene Gaffney, Wanda Blough; First Clarinet: Leonard Volk; Alto Sax, Ronald Korzi.
  All these have been chosen by Instrumental Music Supervisors and the head of the Music Department in each school and their principal.
  The music that will be played includes "Adagio" by Samuel Barber, "Andante Cantabile," by Peter Tschaikovsky, "Second Pucciniana Fantasy" by G. Puccini, "Serenade to a Lemonade," by David Rose, "Symphony in B. Minor No. 8," by Franz Schuber, and "Two Bach Airs," by Maurice G. Whitney.

Students Help Man Observation Post

  For the past few months students of Windber High School have been helping to man the observation post on the roof of the school. The purpose of its observation post and of the ground observer corps is to search the sky for planes.
  When a ground observer sees a plane, they immediately call the local operator, who in turn connects him with Pittsburgh. When he is connected with Pittsburgh, the ground observer reports the kind of plane he has seen, the direction in which it was flying, and the approximate height at which it was flying.
  This program is designed to protect the community.

Cub News

  Hi Y During the latter part of April is having an annual picnic for the members.
  Sr. Y Teens Plans are being made to have a bake sale. The club also contributed to the World Fellowship Fund.
  FHA Sold cakes and cookies, on March 30, to the students in the All County Chorus during the lunch hour.
  Dramatics Club Members attended a play at Pittsburgh which was a musical called, "Guys and Dolls."
  F. T. A. is going to a convention at Slippery Rock.

Tea For Mothers

  The Freshman Home Economics. Class held a tea party on March 24 for the students and their mothers. This was the first tea party that a freshman Home Economics Class ever held.
  Mrs. Mayers and Miss Solomon contributed much towards the success of the party.

Senior Banquet On April 28

  The Senior Class of 1954 will hold their annual banquet in the Scalp Level V. F. W. on April 28. The main course will consist of roast beef.
Easter comes but once a year Bringing peace, love, hope and cheer, Dresses gay with pretty frills, And bonnets sprayed with daffodils.

Windber Girls Attend Pitt Tea

  Eleven Windber High School girls attended a tea for senior high school girls at the Jr. Pitt center in Johnstown on April 1.
  The girls were entertained by the Persian Rifle Drill Team and the Pitt Glee Club. Mr. Cliff McWilliams sang several numbers. Each girl was personally introduced to members of the faculty and all the girls were taken on a tour through the Pitt center.
  They were served tea, cookies, and candy.
  The Windber High School girls were accompanied by Mrs. Reagan and Miss Carroll.

Home Economics Seniors Begin Handwork

  The Senior Home Economics Girls are starting hand work. Some of the finished projects are Pat Saxton's luncheon set and Elizabeth Marauchock's designs made on the Necchi sewing machine. Dorothy Logue and Theresa Benko are learning to crochet. Rita Verostick, Mary Ann Rosa, Rose Navarro, Lois Berkey, and Mary Ann Landi are knitting.
  This is the first time these girls have tried this sort of work and they say they are having a lot of fun with it.

Commercials Plan Blossom Dance

  The Commercial Club's annual Blossom Time Dance will be held on Friday, April 30. Wess Shaw will be playing the music for the evening.
  Moonlight and roses will be the theme of the dance with hundreds of roses decorating the auditorium. A king and queen of roses will highlight the evening with a variety of entertainment including a cake walk.
  The committees for the commercial club are working very hard to make this dance a success.

Juniors Finish Magazine Sale

  The Junior Class has successfully completed their magazine subscription campaign which began last month. There were 10 teams. The captains of the teams were: Andrew Hazy, Tom Botlock, Vaughn Michouls, Mary S. Spinos, Linda Santucci, Rose Gogo, Ruth Varner and Janet Mickey.
  Alvin Maxwell won a radio the first week for selling the most subscriptions and he also received a wristwatch for being the highest salesman.
  Tom Botlock won the second wrist watch for being the second highest salesman. Tom Quinn and Richard Divido won radios.
  Styluses for next year will be given to: Eugene Miller, Ken Solden, Nettie Cunsolo, Art Gialloreto, Emilene Greybeck, Louis Flori, Janet Mickey, Delbert Fleegle, Richard Divido, Vaughn Mickouls, Mary S. Spinos, Bill Honadle, Leonard Volk, Alvin Maxwell and Pat Wagner.

May 6th To Be Recognition Day

  May 6 has been set aside by the seniors as "Recognition Day." On this day the administration and the teachers will pay tribute to students outstanding for their scholastic ability and extra curricular activities during their senior year.
  As part of the program talented members of the senior class will perform.
  Sally Morris is chairman of the Recognition Day exercises.

FHA Holds Bake Sale

  On March 30, the members of the F. H. A. sponsored a bake sale for the benefit of the students who are participating in the All County chorus.
  They sold cakes, cookies, pies and candies.
  The money that was obtained will be put in the fund for next year's treasury.
  In the future, the club is planning to hold a skating party at Skateland.

F.T.A. To Make Visit to Slippery Rock

  The members of the Future Teachers of America have been invited to spend the week end of April 23 at Slippery Rock State Teachers College, Slippery Rock, Pa.
  Plans for the week end include leaving Friday morning and registering from 12:00 noon until 2:00 P. M. The social program, which includes a banquet and dance, will begin at 4:00 and continue until 11:00 P. M. The second general session will begin Saturday morning at 8:15am and continue until 10:00am..
  A discussion meeting on the theme "It's All In the Profession" will get underway at 10:00am. The last general session will begin at 11:30am.
  The purpose of this trip is to give the future college students some ideas of campus life.

Band Concert Is Held On April 6

  The Windber High School presented their annual Spring concert, April 6, in the high school auditorium. Mr. Louis Lambert conducted the band with the assistance of Leonard Volk, student director.
  The program consisted of these musical numbers:
  Star Spangled Banner - Key (Smith).
  Invercargill - Alex Lithgoro.
  Crusaders Overture - Forrest Butchel.
  Chartreuse - Frank Cofield.
  Sax Solo - Ronald Korzi.
  Komm Susser Tod - Bach-Leidzen.
  Overture Militaire - J. Skornika.
  Golden Eagle - Harold Walters.
  Intermission.
  Curtain Call - Frank Cofield.
  Leonard Volk - Student Director.
  South of the Rio - J. Olwadoti.
  Humor escapade - Arranger Paul Yoder.
  Charlotte Harbor Stomp - J. Horndlon.
  Featuring Majorettes.
  Elmer the Elephant - Clarence Hurrell, Jr.
  Big Horn Boogie - Tex Brewster.
  March of the Slide Trombones.
  Liberty Bell March.
  Price of admission was: Adults 50c, students 25c.
  Evening performance began at 8:00pm. There was also a matinee for the students.

Spring Concert to be
Held May 4

  A spring concert will be held on Tuesday, May 4, in the high school auditorium by the music department of Windber High.
  The choral numbers will be conducted by Miss Fornear. Mr. Lambert will direct the orchestra in selected numbers for the program.
  The Mixed Chorus will sing: "The Lord Is My Shepherd", "Out of the Night", "0 Lovely Heart„' "Early One Morning", "Ride the Chariot", "Gandy Dancers Ball" and "Czech Dance Song."
  The Girls' Chorus will sing: "Passing By", "Raggle Taggle Gypsies", "Descants of Familiar Hymns", "Louisiana Hayride" and "Hallejuliah."
  The Girls' Ensemble will sing three numbers: "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes", "It's a Big Wide Wonderful World" and "Clap Yo Hands."
  The Boys' Octette will sing: "I Wish I Was Single Again."
  The combined choruses will conclude the program with "Thank You, America."

Dalimonte on Family Dews Programs

  How does it feel to see yourself on the Camel News Caravan? Ask Delores Dalimonte and she'll tell you that she doesn't know. Although she and her family were featured on the program on March 31, they failed to see themselves because they were tuned to the wrong channel when the pictures were shown.
  John Cameron Swayze used Windber and The Berwind-White Coal Mining Company on his March 31 program to illustrate the critical condition of labor in the United States.
  The Caravan showed pictures of the shut down mine No. 35, the houses, the store, and the people living in the community. The Dalimonte family were shown at their evening meal.

Thespians Hold Banquet

  The National Thespian Troop 1122 held their annual initiation banquet on Tuesday. March 23, at the Palace Hotel.
  Nineteen students joined the rank of the Thespians. Three members of this organization who had already earned one star received two more stars. These students are Lillian Zvolerin, Roland Wise, and Rudy Pristow. The goal of most Thespians is to earn four stars during their years in. the club. A student who has earned four stars is known as an honor Thespian.
  The Thespians are members of the Dramatics Club that have earned enough points and have done their jobs well enough to have the honor of becoming Thespians.

Jr. And Sr. Prom

  The annual Spring prom, sponsored by the Junior class, will be held May 7 in the high school auditorium.
  The Arabian Nights has been chosen as the theme.
  Mr. Atty, the class adviser, says that he will announce the names of the committees later.
