  Each year WHS has celebrated National Education Week. But this year the school went all out for this event. For the whole week almost all classes celebrated by having a speaker, demonstration or lecturer.   Miss McLaughlin's fourth period senior English class had Mrs. Michael Serrian to speak to the class on her home country, England. Mrs. Serrian gave her lecture on how the country of England originated and the geographical features of the country.
  Miss McLaughlin's fifth period junior English class had Mrs. Clyde Bounds as their lecturer. Mrs. Bounds entertained the class by reciting poetry.
  Miss McLaughlin's sixth period English class was given a lecture by Mrs. Bantley on the Windber public library, how it is run and what is essential to be a librarian. Mrs. Bantley is the president of the library board.
  During "Education Week" the Commercial students were fortunate in having Mr. Taylor B. Coffroth, attorney; Mr. William Wiedwald, personnel manager of Eureka Stores; Mrs. Joseph Aldstadt, banker, and Rose Crognale, bookkeeper.
  Mr. Coffroth spoke to the commercial seniors on Business Law. Mr. Wiedwald spoke to the junior commercials on good qualifications of salesmanship.
  Mr. Aldstadt spoke to the sophomores on banking.
  Miss Crognale gave a lecture on the ways to do correct bookkeeping.

Democracy Contest Open To Students

  For the seventh year, The Voice of Democracy Contest for high school students is being sponsored by the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters, the Radio-Television Manufactures Association, and the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce.
  The purpose of the contest is to give youth an opportunity to speak of the blessings and freedoms of this nation.
  All students of the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades are eligible to enter the contest. Each contestant will prepare for it as a classroom assignment.
  It has to be a five-minute broadcast script on the subject, "I Speak for Democracy." Students first will recite their scripts orally in school to determine the entrants in the state and territorial contest.
  Four winners will be given one week, all-expense trip to Washington, D. C. Each will receive a $500 college scholarship check and either a radio or a television receiver. In the national capital the winners will tour historic shrines, observe Congress and other governmental agencies, and many of the nation's leaders.
Rules for the contest are:
  1. Broadcast scripts are to be original; source material may be used.
  2. Students that have been national winners before are not eligible to enter again.
  3. Composition of the script must be by the student.
  4. Judging deadlines at the school, community and state levels must be observed.
  The basis of judging will be Content - 40 points; Delivery - 40 points; and Originally - 20 points.

Class Rings Ready

  Senior class rings can now be ordered at Yanelli & Gaye Jewelers. The ones who ordered theirs in July should receive them any day now. Rings come with three different sets: ruby, black onyx and blue. They also may be obtained in solid Gold.
Mary Ann Blasko was elected queen of the Varsity "W" Dance, Friday, November 20. Gerald Kephart was elected king. The contestants for queen were, left to right: Helen Rakoczy, Helen Crawford, Dorothy Luch, Frances Tantorno, Elizabeth Farkash, Lillian Hromack, Susan Grimison, Veronica Malik, Mary Ann Stopko, Susan Bounds, Sally Morris, Barbara Stone, Mary Ann Blasko, Doris Ripple, Eleanor Voytko, and Peggy Trysnicky. Barbara Botlock was not present when this picture was taken.

Dramatics Club News

  Last night the Dramatics Club put on the play, "Girl Shy," in the high school auditorium.
  This play was directed by Miss McLaughlin. Barbara Botlock was student director.
  The characters were: Tom Arcdale - Roland Wise, Oke Stimson - Rudy Pristow, Caroline - Doris Schwer, Anthony Arcdale - D. Mandel, Sylvia Webster - Emeline Greyback, Racher Garter - Carolyn Sherlock, Asma - C. Ingrum Congrund, Birdie La Verne - Suzanne Bounds, Barbara Sanford – L. Zvolerin, Alfred T. Murgatoyed - J. Ripper, Chuck Mayo - L. Volk.
  The committee were: Tickets, Helen Rakoczy chairman, Helen Nosal, Evellyn Costantino, Kassi Sherlock, Joan Lucas, Veronica Malik, Margie Zahurak, Suie Gillespie, Barbara Voytko, Harriet Murphy. Programs: Mary Ann Blasko, chairman, Joan Couperthwaite. Hand Properties: Phyllis Predko, chairman, Florence Calamica, Emma Rakoczy. The prompters were Rudy Pristow and Betty Koslap.

Commercials Entertain

  On November 5 the Commercial Club held a spaghetti supper at Rillo's. Here are a few comments from those attending: Dolores Gordon: "It was a nice affair and the spaghetti was delicious."
  Annalee Paul: "A great success and we all had a grand time." Mr. Shuster: "I enjoyed the spaghetti."
  Lois Keirn:-"I enjoyed Miss Santucci's jokes." Mary Ann Blasko: "Boy, does Mr. Shuster tell the jokes!"

Wargo To Marines

  Elwood, alias "Snuffy," Wargo, a former student of W. H. S. has enlisted in the Marines. "Snuffy" left on Thursday, October 29, for South Carolina, where he will receive his basic training for a period of six weeks. "Snuffy" was head manager for the W. H. S. Ramblers. He also participated in hockey and baseball. Y
  "Snuffy's" favorite subject was history: U.S. history, that is.

Music Department Sponsors Chapel

   A musical chapel program was hold on November 10 for the entire student body.
  The program was opened by the orchestra's playing the following numbers: "Anchors Aweigh," "When I Grow Too Old to Dream," and "Syncopated Clock." The orchestra was conducted by Mr. Louis Lambert.
  The girls’ chorus sang five numbers. They were, "Night Song," "With a Song In My Heart," "Jerico," "My Hero," and "Prayer for Our Country."
  The Girls Ensemble sang a number titled, "If With All Your Hearts."
  The orchestra played "Daybreak" after which Edward Schafer played a trombone solo, "Gaity Polka."
  The mixed chorus was next, singing five numbers: 'lye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones," "Come Back to Sorrento," "Ho-La-Li," "My Heart Is a Silent Violin," and "Paw Paw Patch."
  The program was then concluded by the orchestra playing "Pagan Love Song." The choruses and the ensemble were conducted by Miss Olive Fornear.

Snow Delays Return Trip

  "Show Me The Way To Go Home" was the theme song of Windber High School fans coming from the Somerset game on Friday night. Because of the unexpected snow fall many of the cars were stuck until all hours in the morning.
  Many familiar faces could be seen pushing cars up icy roads. Some of the people in the cars that got stuck were Mike Pruchnic, Sal Labrano, Viola Miller, Ben Domonkos, and the occupants of Quay Lambert's Plymouth.
  The buses carrying the players and the band arrived in Windber about 1:30am.
  With all the troubles and tribulations the W. H. S. fans all said they had lots of fun.

Home Ec Has New Student Teachers

  Windber High School extends a hearty welcome to two new student Home Ec. teachers, Miss Helen Young and Miss Betty Reed who are from Indiana State Teachers College. They will be here for nine weeks.
  Miss Young, whose home town is near New Kensington, is already acquainted with Windber, since her room mate at college was a Windber girl, Sally Aldstalt. She is president of the Home Ec. Club in college and a member of the Theta Sigma Upsilon Sorority. She enjoys swimming and dancing in her free time.
  Miss Reed, whose hometown is Indiana, likes Windber very much and thinks that the teachers and students are very friendly. She feels very much at home here. At college she is a member of the Signna Sigma Sigma Sorority and a cheerleader. Miss Reed is looking forward to the day after Christmas, because that is going to be her wedding day. Her leisure time is spent riding, swimming and dancing. At the Home Ec. covered dish supper, she entertained the students by doing the Charleston.
  Before coming to Windber, both teachers lived at the Home Management House at Indiana State Teachers College where they cared for a four-month-old baby and managed the house.


Annual Halloween Parade Observed
  On October 29, Windber held their annual Halloween Celebration. Prizes totaling approximately $325 were awarded to the participants. After the parade free cider and doughnuts were served to those in the parade.
  The prizes were presented immediately after the parade at the fire hall. The judges' stand was located in front of the honor roll.   Leading the parade was the Windber High School Band, followed by the Fire Company's Junior Drum Corps.
  Raymond Myers was general chairman for the event which, is sponsored by the fire company in cooperation with the Windber Businessmen's Association.

Cunsolo Wins Contest
  The winner of the record contest sponsored by the Student Council was Nettie Cunsolo. The winning title was "Record Roundup." Prizes included two tickets to the Richland game and 50 cents cash. She appeared on their program Wednesday and dedicated a song. The disc jockeys for the show are Bill Dusack and Steve Benko.

  The Senior Class sponsored the "Varsity W Dance" on Friday, November 20 from 8:00 to 11:00 p. m. The feature of this dance is the selection of a football king and queen by those who attend the dance.
  On October 22 the senior class nominated 17 girls from among whom a queen will be elected. The remaining 16 will be her attendants.
  The candidates are Mary Ann Blasko, Sue Bounds, Sally Morris, Veronica Malik, Peggy Trysnicky, Dorothy Luch, Helen Rakoczy, Helen Crawford, Eleanor Voytko, Frances Tantorno, Lillian Hromack, Elizabeth Farkash, Sue Grimison, Doris Ripple, Barbara Stone, Mary Ann Stopko.
  The boys who will be candidates for the king are the varsity players, and managers and one junior boy who is playing his last year of varsity football. They are: Fred Greene, Bob Halcovich, Terry Fagan, Ed Hordubay, Ralph Facciani, John Sombronsky, Dudley Hunt, John Hajnos, Chuck Baughman, "Hank" Hudy, Gerald Kephart, Bill Keller, George Zindash, Stanley Kush, Joe Sendek and "Bombo" Clark.

Freshmen Class Holds Dance

  The Freshmen held their annual Halloween Dance on October 29, from 8:00 to 11:00.
  Music was furnished by the At intermission the entertainment was furnished by Helen, Emma and Shirley Rakoczy, who sang “In the Mission of St. Augustine," while their cousin, Margie Makoczy accompanied them. Joyce Balser did an acrobatic dance. Mary Jane Reighard sang "Ebb Tide." Eleanor Seneck did a baton routine. John Selapack played two numbers on the piano: "Saber Dance" and "Beer Barrel Polka." Rhoda Horwin ended the program by performing a ballet dance to the song "Three Loves."
  Mr. Ober is the Freshman Class adviser. The class officers are Steve Kurcis, president; Rhoda Horwin, vice president; Emma Rakoczy, treasurer, and John Rubal, secretary.

Nick Campitelli To Head Canteen

  Nick Campitelli of 1817 Graham Avenue was named adult adviser and business manager of the Windber Teen Canteen. Mr. Campitelli was elected by a special meeting consisting of the junior and senior board.
  Mrs. Elizabeth Grimes was appointed assistant to Mr. Campitelli.
  Mr. Campitelli is junior high football and basketball coach for Richland Township Schools. He also serves as assistant varsity coach and as a junior high school instructor.
  Mr. Campitelli and Mrs. Grimes succeed Nevin Netherlanders, who has moved to Altoona.

Skating Party
  The Stylus staff is sponsoring a skating party at Skateland on Wednesday, December 2. Wednesday night is hobo night at Skateland. The admission is 60c. This skating party will help to support the financial program of the Stylus.
