Freshmen Lead
Honor Roll

  For the fourth six weeks of school the freshmen lead the honor roll with 30 A-B students, senior and sophomores both have 22 and the juniors have 18.

County Chorus Set For March 30

  The annual Somerset County All County Chorus will be presented March 30 and April 1st at Windber and Somerset High Schools. The students participating in the music festival will represent all the high schools in the county.
  Windber High School will be represented by: Linda Aldstadt, Rose Marie Wargo, Robert McDowell, Larry Wirick, Ronald Bahorik, Geno Leonardis, Robert Tobias, Evelyn Constantino, Nettie Consolo, Lorraine DiGuilo, Alma Alexander, Fred Greene, Suzanne Gillespie, Richard Grove, 1 Peggy Hill, Michael Kallay, and Robert Rhodes. I
  Some of the schools participating are:
  Windber, Shade, Berlin-Brothersvalley, Forbes, Jenner-Boswell Joint, and Conemaugh Township.
  The high school students are urged to support the county music affair by advertising it all over our community.
  Tickets may be purchased from Miss Fornear. Student tickets may be purchased for .25 and adult tickets for .50.

Chapel Program

  On the Chapel program February 16th, Mr. Kawchak awarded the footballers and managers sweaters. They were white and blue with large W's on the pockets.
  Miss McLaughlin was featured on the same program. She talked about her trip to Iraq and showed pictures in color. The teachers and the student body enjoyed the pictures and thought they were interesting and educational.

Jr. Pitt Students Present Program

  On Thursday, March 11, students from the Johnstown Center of the University of Pittsburgh entertained the students of Windber High School with a chapel program.
  A drill team, consisting of eight boys, put on a demonstration of precision marching and rifle manipulation. This team was under the direction of Joe Washko.
  The Pitt chorus sang "Ave Maria", "The Sleigh", "Louisiana Hayride", and "Your Land and My Land." The quartette sang "A Woman", "The Wheels", a Negro spiritual, and "Down By the Riverside."

Books Donated To Library

  The W. H. S. library recently received a donation of books from Mrs. George Wheeling.
  Some of the books are: "White Witch Doctor," "Stephania," "The Man Without a Country," "Sapphire and the Slave Girl," "Malice of Men," "Prince of Foxes," "Bishop's Mantle," "The Chain," "That Girl From Memphis," "Good Morning Young Lady," "The Citadel," "The Robe," "Let Love Come Last," "So Well Remembered," "The Black Rose," "The Twelve Seasons," "Eisenhower, Man and Soldier."

Carol Sanders To Model

  A sophomore girl, Carol Sanders, has been selected to be one of the models in Glosser Brother's
  Modeling Review. Carol was selected to take part in the show after passing a screen test. Carol modeled a summer frock, a white summer topper and a one piece swim suit.

Susquehanna
Entertains

  Susquehanna University held a program for the students on March 1. It consisted of a short play and musical selections. All seniors interested went to the council room after the program where they met with the college representatives.
  The annual March of Dimes drive was held in W. H. S. during the month of February. The amount received was $59.53.

All County Band

  The Somerset County All-County Band Festivals were February 22 and 25 at Conemaugh Township and Berlin.
  The county music departments are divided into the two sections, the north and south.
  The South County Festival was held at Berlin, February 22. The afternoon performance was presened by the repersentatives from all county bands, which made up the All County Band.
  The North County Festival was held at Conemaugh Township., February 25. Again the All-County Band presented its program.
  The schools represented in the North County Festival were:
  1. Conemaugh Township band and orchestra.
  2. Windber band and orchestra.
  3. Jenners - Boswell Joint band.
  4. Forbes band.
  5. Shade band and orchestra.
  6. Shanksville - Stonycreek band.

  The directors and the songs they conducted for the festival represented the schools from all over the county and are as follows:

  All-County Band presented evening concerts at both Berlin and Conemaugh Township High Schools.

Stylus Staff Has Banquet

  An Thursday. February 25, 1954, the Stylus Staff, acompanied by Miss Steele and Mr. Emery, attended a banquet at Ripple's. Approximately 25 persons attended. Each person had a choice of ham or steak.
  Every member of the staff received a miniature "Stylus" with a little poem about his work on the staff. After the dinner they sang and danced and a few of the students went to Richland Township High School to see the senior class play, "Calamity Kids."

Operation F. T. A.
To Take Over

  Operation F. T. A. will get underway March 22. It will be an opportunity for all future teachers to get some experience in the field of their choice.
  Under this plan, the student teacher will conduct the class, while the regular teacher observes, because the membership of the F. T. A. is not large enough to provide a student selected.

Singer Honors
W. H. S.

  On March 4, Pruth McFarlin and his accompanist Sarah Hedrick entertained the students of W. H. S.
  Mr. McFarlin hails from Chicago where he lives with his wife and two children.
  Mr. McFarlin started singing at the age of eight. He developed his voice while singing his brothers and sisters to sleep. His first concert sponsored by a newspaper editor at Pensacola, Florida, was a success, so he made plans to become a singer.
  While studying at Southern University, he received his Bachelor of Art degree. He also studied music at the Eastmen School of Music at Rochester, New York, for four years. He continued to study under Frank LaLorge in New York City.
  Town Hall, New York is where he made his professional debut. Mr. McFarlin also sang for the late President Roosevelt.
  He spends a great deal of his time at summer church camp for young people.
  When asked what he thought of Windber High School, he said, "I think the school here was one of the nicest that I have sung in, in the east. You have a wonderful faculty and your hospitality is unexcelled."
  Sarah Hedrick also began her study of music at the age of eight. She studied voice under the scholarship at, at Fine-Art school of music. After she completed her work at DePaul University. Sarah went to Chicago where she composed a suite of songs for the piano entitled "North American Suite."
  Miss Hedrick and Pruth McFarlin have been together for six years. They have their radio and T.V. shows on the A. B. C. network .
